The Ba Dinh District is the political and historical heart of Hanoi. Centered around Ba Dinh Square, where President Ho Chi Minh declared independence in 1945, the area clusters Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, the Presidential Palace, the Ho Chi Minh Museum, and One Pillar Pagoda. To the south lie Van Mieu (the Temple of Literature), Vietnam’s first university, and Thang Long Imperial Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This district, dense with national symbolic spaces, offers an ideal setting to understand Vietnam’s history and spirit.

Key Experiences

Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum is a solemn memorial space housing the president’s preserved body (free entry, with dress code and item restrictions). Nearby, visitors can walk to the Presidential Palace, Ho Chi Minh’s stilt house, and One Pillar Pagoda (founded in 1049, a unique lotus-shaped temple on a single pillar). Van Mieu, founded in 1070, is a Confucian temple and former imperial university, famous for its 82 stone steles inscribed with the names of successful scholars. Thang Long Imperial Citadel exhibits excavated ruins of the royal city dating back to the 8th century. For modern views, the Lotte Center Observation Deck offers panoramic vistas of West Lake and the city.

  • Transportation: 10–15 minutes by Grab car from the Old Quarter. Walking is feasible between sites, but allow extra time due to the large scale of the square area.
  • Hours & Dress Code: Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum is open only in the morning (typically 07:30–10:30) and frequently closed on Mondays and Fridays. Annual maintenance closures also apply. Sleeveless tops and short shorts are prohibited; photography and large bags are restricted.
  • Tips: Start early at Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, then visit the Presidential Palace, One Pillar Pagoda, and Van Mieu to cover key sites by mid-morning.
