French Quarter

The French Quarter is a planned district located south of Hoan Kiem Lake, established during the French colonial period from the late 19th to early 20th century. Its wide tree-lined avenues, colonial buildings with yellow walls, and European-style cityscape, exemplified by the Opera House, stand in sharp contrast to the labyrinthine Old Quarter. With a concentration of museums, theaters, luxury hotels, and shopping areas, it is an ideal place to enjoy Hanoi’s modern history and elegant atmosphere.

Key Experiences

Completed in 1911, the Hanoi Opera House is a Neoclassical building modeled after the Paris Opera, serving as the starting point for the square and Trang Tien Street. The Hoa Lo Prison (also known as the Hanoi Hilton), built by the French, exhibits the history of the colonial and war periods, while the Vietnam National Museum of History and the Vietnam Women’s Museum offer excellent indoor activities even on rainy days. The Sofitel Legend Metropole, opened in 1901, is perfect for savoring the colonial ambiance with coffee or afternoon tea, and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception (Saint Joseph’s Cathedral) on the west side of the lake is the oldest Neo-Gothic cathedral in Hanoi.

Shopping, Dining, and Recommended Route

Trang Tien Plaza is Hanoi’s premier department store featuring luxury brands, while nearby alleyways house Bun Cha Huong Lien, famous for its visit by former US President Barack Obama, where you can enjoy affordable charcoal-grilled pork and noodles. A recommended route starts at the Opera House, continues to the Metropole for afternoon tea, and then proceeds to the Vietnam National Museum of History, Hoa Lo Prison, and the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Most of these sites are within a 15–20 minute walk of each other.

• Transportation: It is a 10–15 minute walk from the Old Quarter, and Grab motorbikes and cars are also affordable.
• Operating Hours: Museums and the prison are typically closed on Mondays or close between 4–5 PM, so visiting in the morning to early afternoon is recommended.
• Tips: The Opera House is best appreciated for its exterior during the day when there are no performances, and the Cathedral may have restricted viewing during mass times.
