West Lake (Tây Hồ)

Tay Ho (West Lake), with a circumference of approximately 17 km, is Hanoi’s largest lake and a relaxed district where ancient temples blend seamlessly with upscale cafes and restaurants. It is beloved by both locals and expats for walking, cycling, and sunset viewing, offering a peaceful escape from the city center’s hustle and bustle. The lake is separated from Tuc Bac Lake at its southern end by Thanh Nien Road.

Key Experiences

Tran Quoc Pagoda, located on an island in the southeast of the lake, is Hanoi’s oldest Buddhist temple, founded in the 6th century. Its iconic red pagoda rising above the water makes it a prime photography spot. Nearby, Kim Lien Pagoda is another ancient temple renowned for its beautiful wooden architecture. At the tip of the peninsula, Ba Vi Temple is a central shrine dedicated to Mother Goddess worship, bustling with devotees on weekends. For an early morning vibe, visit Quan An Flower Market; for family trips, consider adding Tay Ho Waterpark during the summer.

Ban Thom Hotay, located along Thanh Nien Road connecting Tay Ho and Tuc Bac, is a famous old-school restaurant known for its crispy fried shrimp. The northern side of the lake along Xuan Dieu Street features Western-style brunch cafes and international cuisine. A recommended itinerary includes visiting Tran Quoc Pagoda, Ba Vi Temple, and Quan An Flower Market, followed by watching the sunset at a lakeside cafe. Cycling around the lake or taking a Grab motorbike ride are also great options.
