Central (Dương Đông)
The central town where half the island's residents live — the island's heart of night markets, dining and local culture.
Dương Đông is the central city of Phú Quốc and the heartbeat of island life. With a fish market, traditional market, shrines, and pepper & nước mắm (fish sauce) workshops all within walking distance, it is the ideal area to experience the real Vietnam beyond the resorts.
Located on a rocky islet off the city center, Dinh Cầu Temple was built in 1937 as a lighthouse and shrine to pray for the safety of fishermen. Climbing 29 stone steps offers a panoramic view of the town and the sunset. As dusk falls, the adjacent Dinh Cau Night Market opens, offering affordable charcoal-grilled seafood, skewers, tropical fruits, and desserts.
A short distance from the city center, nature and industrial experiences await. About 10km to the southeast, Suối Tranh Waterfall is an ecological spot for forest walks and water play. The Hàm Ninh Fishing Village on the eastern coast is known for its wooden piers and seafood restaurants. You can also visit pepper farms and nước mắm workshops to see and buy the production process of Phú Quốc’s specialties.
Recommended Itinerary
Start your day experiencing local specialties at pepper farms, nước mắm workshops, and Hàm Ninh Fishing Village. In the late afternoon, take a walk at Suối Tranh Waterfall, then head to Dinh Cau Temple for sunset views and dinner at the night market for a natural flow.
Practical Tips
- Transport: Most resorts are a 10–20 minute drive from Dương Đông city center. The night market and temple are within walking distance.
- Night Market: Always check the weight and price of seafood before ordering; bargaining is common.
- Shopping: Nước mắm (fish sauce) is a liquid and must be checked in luggage; do not carry it on board. Pepper and sim fruit wine are popular souvenirs.
- Dress Code: Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is recommended when visiting temples and shrines.
