Hanoi's Old Quarter (36 Streets) originated as a cluster of handicraft guilds that supplied goods to the Thang Long royal capital a millennium ago. Today, narrow alleys named after their traditional trades—such as Hang Bac (silver), Hang Gai (silk), and Hang Ma (paper goods and decorations)—interconnect in a grid pattern. The area itself is a sight to behold, with French-style tube houses, temples, markets, and street stalls intermingled. This compact, walkable district is an ideal first stop for independent travelers from Thailand.

The Hoan Kiem Lake in the south and the Ngoc Son Temple across the iconic red Huc Bridge are symbols of the Old Quarter. In the mornings, you can observe locals practicing Tai Chi by the lake. On weekend evenings (Friday to Sunday), the lakeside transforms into a car-free pedestrian zone featuring street performances and night markets. At the northern end, Dong Xuan Market, built by the French in 1889, is Hanoi’s largest traditional market. As night falls, low plastic chairs spill out into the alleys of Ta Hien Beer Street.
