Seventy-six floors up, or six floors up an old apartment block — the city's two best angles

Ho Chi Minh City looks like two different cities from above and from inside. From the seventy-sixth floor you can see the whole bend of the Saigon River around the city in one glance; from a window seat on the sixth floor of a peeling apartment block, the Nguyễn Huệ walking street lies directly below you. These two heights are the city's signature frames.

The best window is the forty minutes after the sun starts to drop — the sky going from orange to navy while the office lights come on one floor at a time. Rooftops have no free tables at that hour, so arrive an hour early or book a window seat. Most enforce smart casual: people have genuinely been turned away at the door in flip-flops, tank tops or gym shorts.

But shoot only from up high and you miss half the city. A seventy-year-old Chinese-Vietnamese coffee shop in a Chợ Lớn market alley that starts brewing at two in the morning; a local restaurant that put plastic chairs on a fourth-floor roof — places that need no filter are down there too.

Nine floors of a 1960s apartment block, turned into cafes one flat at a time

A nine-storey apartment block from the 1960s where the flats opened their doors one by one and became cafes and clothing shops. Every floor has a different owner, so no two interiors look alike, and the angle down from each balcony shifts slightly as you climb. The window seats on the fifth and sixth floors face straight down the Nguyễn Huệ pedestrian street and are the most photographed spots in the building; The Letter Coffee on the sixth is one of them. There are stairs as well as a lift, and the lift queue is long on weekend evenings. People still live here — do not photograph in front of closed doors or raise your voice in the corridors.

Before you goEach cafe has a different owner, so ordering on one floor does not buy you a seat on another — move floors and you order again. The best light is after sunset when the street below comes on, which is also when the lift is busiest; rather than wait a floor at a time, take the stairs. Menus and prices differ from cafe to cafe, so we have not given a representative range.

Restaurant on 23, rooftop bar on 24 — District 3 from the edge of an infinity pool

Two floors at the top of a District 3 hotel: the restaurant on 23, the rooftop bar on 24, with the infinity pool right beside the bar. The pool, though, is for hotel guests only — people do arrive with swimwear having read 'rooftop infinity pool' and find they cannot get in. The photograph here is the one taken across the pool edge with the skyline behind it. From three until six the whole drinks list on 24 is half price, which makes it the best window to claim a table and simply stay there until the sun goes.

Vietnam's highest lounge — the Saigon River from floors 75 and 76

Landmark 81 is the tallest building in Vietnam and this lounge occupies its 75th and 76th floors. There is no entry ticket; you order one item per person, and drinks or cake run 150,000–250,000₫. This is effectively the only seat in the city that gets the full bend of the Saigon River around the towers into one frame. Window tables are in demand and worth requesting about a week ahead. Smart casual is enforced — people have been turned away at the door in flip-flops, tank tops or gym shorts.

Before you goYou do not need a separate observation-deck ticket — one order per person gets you in. Ask for a window table when you book. Landmark 81 is in Bình Thạnh rather than District 1, fifteen to twenty minutes by Grab, and the building is big enough that it is faster to ask the desk which lift serves the lounge. We could not confirm the opening hours — check their social channels or a map app before you go.

The Deck Saigon

A timber deck at the water's edge — Thảo Điền's sunset table

At the end of a narrow Thảo Điền lane the ground opens straight onto the Saigon River, and this timber deck sits on it. Where the downtown rooftops give you the photograph looking down on the city, this one is taken at water level — palms on the far bank, a barge going by, the sun dropping into the river. Lunch runs twelve to three, dinner from five, with the kitchen's last order at half past nine. Dishes run 100,000–400,000₫, dearer than a local restaurant, but that is the price of the deck. Book if you want a riverside table at sunset on a weekend.

Secret Garden Restaurant

Fourth-floor roof of an old building — plastic chairs, potted plants, home cooking

From Pasteur Street this looks like nothing but an old building. Climb the narrow stairs to the fourth floor and the roof opens into a restaurant packed with potted plants, hanging lanterns and wooden tables. It is a rooftop, but not the kind you go to for a skyline — you sit down among the roofs of the neighbouring buildings, which makes the photograph a completely different thing. The food is southern home cooking: pork ribs braised in caramel, banana-flower salad, sour fish soup (canh chua). The stairs are steep, so give older members of the party warning.

Opens at two in the morning — a seventy-year-old Chinese coffee stall in a Chợ Lớn market lane

Inside a market lane off Phùng Hưng in District 5, a Hainanese Chinese family is on its third generation of making coffee here. No paper filter: the grounds go into a long-handled cloth bag (vợt) steeped in boiling water, the old way, and only a handful of places in this city still do it. The odd part is the two-o'clock opening, which exists because the market moves at that hour. The photograph here is not the coffee, it is everything around it — the aged shophouse, the blackened aluminium pot, the early light coming down the narrow lane. This is not a cafe built for visitors, so almost no English is spoken and you will end up ordering by pointing.
