Night streets and markets

A wholesale flower market becomes a food alley at three — every district's night is different here

The night here does not gather in one place. Where Da Nang's evening runs in a single line along the river, in this city each district has its own night — District 10 for crab soup and rice-paper salad, District 4 for sea snails and clams, District 11 for dumplings, District 1 for backpacker bars, District 6 for the wholesale market's late kitchen.

If you pick only one, make it Hồ Thị Kỷ in District 10. It is a wholesale flower market by day; after three in the afternoon the carts go up in the same lanes and one alley holds crab soup (súp cua), rice-paper salad (bánh tráng trộn) and Cambodian-style chè. This was a neighbourhood of Chinese families who came in from Cambodia, so the menu carries dishes you will not find in the other markets.

Stalls are almost all cash only — carry 10,000, 20,000 and 50,000₫ notes. In the tourist blocks it is safer to ask the price before you order: local papers have repeatedly reported goods stalls in and around Bến Thành quoting three or four times the going rate. In lanes where motorbikes ride up onto the pavement, wear your bag in front. Two things worth knowing before you set out: the Hào Sĩ Phường alley in Chợ Lớn (206 Trần Hưng Đạo B) is famous as a photo spot, but residents have asked people not to shoot there since 2020 — walk through quietly and leave the camera down. And Lương Nhữ Học lantern street is not a year-round night market; the lanterns only go up for about two weeks before the Mid-Autumn Festival.

Chợ Hồ Thị Kỷ food alley

A wholesale flower market by day, the city's biggest food alley from three in the afternoon

Hồ Thị Kỷ street in District 10 and the lanes running off it are one continuous market. By day it is a wholesale flower market, with chrysanthemums and roses coming off trucks; after three in the afternoon the carts go up in the same lanes. What separates it from the other markets is who settled here — Chinese families who came in from Cambodia — so the menu carries dishes the others do not have, like crab soup (súp cua) and Cambodian-style chè. The way to eat is to order small from several carts and keep walking; three or four things rarely add up to 100,000₫. Seven to nine in the evening is the crush.

Before you goThe flower market and the food alley share a name, which confuses people — get out of the Grab at Chợ Hồ Thị Kỷ and follow the lane with the crowd in it. The stalls are scattered through narrow hẻm, so walk one loop before you order. Cash only, and motorbikes come right down the lane, so keep your bag in front of you.

Ốc Oanh — Vĩnh Khánh street

District 4's snail street — order a plate, then another, and the evening stretches

Vĩnh Khánh street in District 4 is an ốc street end to end. Ốc covers sea snails, clams and whelks, and here they are grilled, stir-fried and steamed into more than twenty preparations — garlic butter, tamarind, salted egg yolk. You order one plate, finish it, then order the next, which is why dinner here runs long. Ốc Oanh is one of the longest-known addresses on the street and runs from one in the afternoon to midnight. It works much like a Thai seafood shophouse, except the sauces lean sweet and nutty rather than sour and hot. Budget from 100,000₫ a head.

Before you goWe could not confirm individual dish prices — sit down, read the board and check the going rate before ordering. Plates are not large, so start with two or three and add more if you need to. Several places on the street have similar names (Ốc Đào among them) and the house numbers differ between sources, so confirm you are at 534. The street is jammed with parked bikes; getting out of the Grab at the top of the street is quicker. Sources also differ on when they open — they may not be open yet in the early afternoon, so evening is the safe bet.

Sủi Cảo Thiên Thiên — Hà Tôn Quyền street

Seven hundred metres of dumpling shops, open till half past one

Hà Tôn Quyền in District 11 is a short street, about seven hundred metres, and almost all of it sells sủi cảo — boiled dumplings. This is a Chinese neighbourhood bordering Chợ Lớn, so the wrapper and filling are Cantonese: prawn and pork chopped coarse, the skin rolled thin, floated in clear broth. They come three ways — tossed dry in oyster sauce (khô), in soup, and fried — and the sensible move is to put all three on the table and share. Thiên Thiên was started by a Chinese-Vietnamese woman some thirty years ago and still runs, from half past twelve in the afternoon until half past one in the morning, which makes it one of the few real answers to being hungry late in this city.

Expect to wait at the evening peak. It is within walking distance of Chợ Lớn in District 5, so it fits neatly at the end of a Chợ Lớn evening.

Phố đi bộ Bùi Viện

Bùi Viện walking street

Closed to traffic Friday to Sunday, seven at night until two — the backpacker street

District 1's backpacker street. From seven in the evening until two in the morning on Friday, Saturday and Sunday the traffic is shut out and the bars turn their speakers to face the road. The zone runs beyond Bùi Viện itself into Đỗ Quang Đẩu, Phạm Ngũ Lão and Đề Thám. The food is a mix of street carts and bar snacks and costs more than in the other lanes — this is less a place to eat than a place to see, once, what the city's night looks like. An hour on foot and then moving on is the right dose.

Before you goPolice have broken up organised pickpocket and snatch-and-grab groups here more than once — do not walk with your phone in your hand, and wear your bag in front. Touting is heavy, so ask the price before you sit down. The pedestrian closure is Friday to Sunday evenings only; on weekdays the motorbikes come straight through. With children, skip this street and go to Hồ Thị Kỷ or Vĩnh Khánh instead. Prices vary too widely between carts and bars for us to give a representative range — always ask before you sit down.

Chợ đêm Bến Thành

Bến Thành night market

When the market hall shuts, the stalls go up on the two streets outside

The Bến Thành market building closes around six in the evening, and that is when the stalls go up on Phan Bội Châu and Phan Chu Trinh, the two streets that run along its sides, and the night market begins. The east side (Phan Bội Châu) leans towards cosmetics and household goods, the west (Phan Chu Trinh) towards shoes and souvenirs, with grilled-seafood stalls set in between — prawns, crab, blood cockles and scallops cooked in front of you. Works on the square around the market ran from autumn 2024 into spring 2025, but the traders stayed open throughout and the night market carried on. The crush is between seven and ten.

Before you goAsk the price before you order. Local papers have repeatedly reported goods stalls in and around the market quoting three or four times the going rate — in one case 800,000₫ for an umbrella worth 150,000₫. There is no equivalent reporting about the food stalls, but this is a tourist block and the same rule is the safe one. Seafood is often sold by weight, so confirm both the weight and the price per unit. Because quoted prices differ so much from stall to stall, we have not given a representative range either.

Chợ Bình Tây

Chợ Lớn's wholesale market — noodle and congee carts from two in the morning

Bình Tây in District 6 is a large wholesale market under a yellow clock tower. By day it belongs to traders restocking rather than to visitors, but that is exactly why it has a second face at night and before dawn — carts inside and around it selling bamboo-shoot noodle soup (bún măng), congee, braised offal (phá lấu), bún riêu, bánh ướt and stewed duck (vịt tiềm). It opens at two in the morning because that is when the wholesale trade starts. Good as the last stop of a Chợ Lớn day, or as a very early morning look at how this city actually runs.

Before you goSources differ on the closing time — check a map app if you are going late. It is a wholesale market, so many stalls are not keen on single-item purchases. For food, the carts in the surrounding lanes are better than the stalls inside the hall. Twenty to thirty minutes by Grab from District 1; pair it with Thiên Hậu temple and An Đông market for a half-day in Chợ Lớn. Prices differ from cart to cart, so we have not given a representative range.
