Above the lake, beside the rails, and with the whole city under your feet

Hanoi has no open sea to look at. What it has instead is height in layers. Old Quarter houses are three or four metres wide and five or six storeys tall, and there is a café on top of a great many of them. From the street it is a silk shop; four flights up, the whole of Hoàn Kiếm Lake is in front of you.

So in Hanoi the photograph is something you climb to. The six below are chosen by that layer — two top floors with the city laid out flat, one window with Long Biên Bridge and its trains straight ahead, one roof hidden at the top of a silk shop's stairs, one house papered wall to ceiling in customers' notes, and one lane where the train comes through.

Late afternoon is the light to aim for. Get to a rooftop forty minutes before sunset if you want both the colour and the lights, and check the train timetable before the bridge or the tracks. A drink runs 40,000–90,000₫ (50–110 baht); a rooftop cocktail is around 200,000₫, about 250 baht.

An open-air rooftop bar at the top of Lotte Center Hanoi. It is open on all sides: West Lake on one, the Old Quarter and the Red River on the other. Hanoi's tall buildings are scattered rather than clustered, so there are not many places where the shape of the city resolves in one look — this is one of them. Go up about forty minutes before sunset and watch the light go and the lights come on from the same seat. Live music runs from 7:30pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Directly below, on the 65th floor, there is a separate glassed-in observation deck if you would rather not drink.

West Lake and Trúc Bạch in a single frame

A lounge on the twentieth floor of the Pan Pacific Hanoi. The hotel sits at the end of the Thanh Niên causeway that separates West Lake from Trúc Bạch Lake, so from the terrace the big lake is on your left and the small one on your right at the same time. It is the most water you will get in a Hanoi view. It is lower than Top of Hanoi, but you are closer to the lakes, so you can watch the colour settle on the surface as the sun goes. It opens at 2pm and serves afternoon tea until six — the set for two includes two glasses of prosecco or cocktails, and it overlaps with the sunset hour. Indoor and outdoor seating are separate, so say outdoor when you book.

Watch the train cross Long Biên Bridge from above

A five-storey café built into the old railway staff quarters at Long Biên station, with seating from the third floor up. Long Biên Bridge fills the window — French-built in 1902, and trains still cross it several times a day. The moment a train climbs onto the bridge is the shot here, and from the fifth-floor terrace you get the whole span with the Red River behind it. Reviews call the coffee tourist-priced, which makes sense once you think of it as two hours in a window seat. Mornings are quieter and easier for choosing a table; at sunset the light comes through the girders.

Walk through a silk shop, climb four floors, and the lake opens up

Number 11 Hàng Gai looks like nothing but a silk shop from the street. Walk in, follow the corridor, and you come out in a narrow courtyard; climb four flights from there and you are on a roof terrace with Hoàn Kiếm Lake laid out in front of you. This is where you learn in your legs what an Old Quarter building actually is — narrow at the front, deep, and going up. The stairs are tight and steep, so leave big bags below. There are only a handful of tables on the roof, so afternoons mean waiting. Order the egg coffee: it arrives sitting in a bowl of hot water so the egg cream on top never goes cold.

Before you goThere is almost no café sign from the street — just walk into the silk shop and follow the corridor to the courtyard and the stairs. The roof is reached by stairs only and is tight, so prams and large cases won't work. You take a seat first and order downstairs, so leave someone with your table rather than carrying everything down.

The Note Coffee

Walls, ceiling and stairs, all under layers of customers' notes

Four narrow floors where the walls, the ceiling and even the stair rail are papered in layers of coloured sticky notes, written and stuck up by the customers themselves — more than 220,000 of them by now. In a photograph it reads as a wall of colour; standing in it, the pleasure is that the languages change floor by floor. Ask at the counter for a note and a pen before you sit down; they are free. The higher you go the narrower the windows and the fewer the people, so for photographs the landings between the third and fourth floors work best. It is three minutes on foot from Hoàn Kiếm Lake, which makes it easy to fold into an Old Quarter walk.

Cafés on both sides of the rails — the train passes within arm's reach

South of Hanoi station the houses press right up against the track, and their ground floors have become cafés. You sit on a plastic stool beside the rails with a coffee until it is time, and when the train is due the staff move everyone back inside. The few seconds it takes to pass is the whole point of the lane. Organised group tours have been banned since March 2025, and the most photographed stretch, along Trần Phú and Phùng Hưng, is barricaded. What is still reachable is the Lê Duẩn section south of the station, and only as a customer who has ordered a drink at one of the cafés. The rules change often, so ask the café what the situation is that day.
