Where the sun goes into the sea

One of the few coastlines in Vietnam that faces west

Open a map of Vietnam and most of the beaches face east. Da Nang, Nha Trang, Quy Nhon — those are sunrise coasts. Phu Quoc is different: the island's long shoreline faces west, so the sun goes down into the water every day. That is why most photographs of this island are taken in the evening.

So the six places below were chosen by time of day rather than by kitchen. Beach clubs where you sit with your feet in the sand, a rooftop nineteen floors up over the length of Long Beach, a bar on a small islet you reach by boat, an infinity pool whose edge erases the line between water and sea. The food is generally fine and the prices run three or four times a local restaurant — you are paying for the seat.

Sunset falls roughly between 17:45 and 18:30 depending on the season; check it on the day you arrive. Plan on being there an hour before if you want a good seat, and during the April–November wet season — heaviest July to September — don't hang a whole day on the sunset; give yourself two evenings to catch one. The sky is often at its best right after a squall has passed.

Sunset Sanato Beach Club

A timber walkway into the sea, and sculptures the size of houses

This is the most photographed stretch of beach on the island. A wooden deck runs a long way out over the water, and around it stand oversized installations — a jellyfish, an elephant, arches. It was built to be photographed, and once the sun drops, the silhouettes against a red sky do produce an image you will not get elsewhere. There is an entry fee: 90,000–100,000₫, plus another 100,000₫ if you want a sun lounger. Drinks are usually not included, so budget accordingly. In the evening there is a DJ, a barbecue and a fire show. It is 2.5 km from the airport, which makes it easy to attach to an arrival or departure afternoon.

Before you goIf the sunset photo is the point, get in ninety minutes before sundown — every installation has a queue and plenty of visitors report that an hour was not enough. Entry and the lounger are billed separately, and drinks again on top. A lot of the structures stand in sand and seawater, so bring sandals and a change of clothes, and repellent for after dark.

INK 360

Nineteen floors up, the whole of Long Beach in one line

A rooftop bar on the nineteenth floor of the InterContinental Long Beach Resort. The 360 in the name means what it says: one side runs the full length of Bãi Trường beach, the other looks back at the island's hills. The interior was built around a deep-sea theme — octopus and kraken forms across the ceiling and walls — so once the sun is down and the lights come up, the photographs change character entirely. Sunset is outside; the interior shots are inside. You do not have to be a guest — take the lobby lift. This is among the most expensive seats on the island, so think of the drink as the price of the view.

Before you goOpening hours differ between sources — some list 17:00–23:00, others until 24:30 with Mondays closed. Call or ask the resort front desk before you go. Sunset seating is outdoors and limited, so booking is the safer move. It is a resort rooftop, so skip the flip-flops and beachwear, and budget three or four times a local bar.

Rock Island Club

One rocky islet, and the whole of it is the bar

Off Vũng Bầu on the island's northwest coast, in front of the Nam Nghi resort, sits a small rocky islet called Mong Tay. The whole islet is the bar. A boat from the resort jetty takes a few minutes, and when you step off there is seating and a counter built among the boulders. Sea on every side means water in every direction you face, and at sunset the boats and rocks stack up as silhouettes. The catch is that it only works when the boat runs — swell stops the crossing, and you need to check in advance whether non-guests are admitted and when the last boat leaves. Confirm those and it gives you the most distinctive hour on the island.

Before you goCall the resort first to confirm whether non-guests are admitted and how late the boat runs — we could not verify either. Swell stops the crossing. You will be walking on rock, so no heels, and ask about the last boat back before you sit down. It is well north of Dương Đông, so hold a car for the return.

From the sunset drink through to past midnight

A beach bar down alley 124 off Trần Hưng Đạo. It opens at four in the afternoon and runs to half past midnight, which makes it the rare place where the sunset drink and the rest of the night happen in the same seat. Bean bags and low tables sit on the sand, and near the water there are swings and photo frames that draw a queue as the light drops. After dark the lights and the music come up and the character shifts toward a club. If you want a quiet evening, leave just after sunset; if you want a night out, that is when it starts. Its practical advantage is proximity — it is a short Grab from central Dương Đông.

Before you goArrive an hour before sundown to get a spot at the waterline. The volume rises after dark, so leave before that if you want a quiet evening. It sits down an alley (hẻm) and the sign is hard to see from the main road — tell your Grab driver alley 124. We could not confirm whether there is a minimum spend or cover charge, so ask before you sit.

Where the infinity pool edge hands over to the sea

A beach club right beside the InterContinental on Bãi Trường. It opens at half six in the morning and runs to ten at night, so any hour works, but photographically the moment is late afternoon, when the infinity pool meets the sea — the pool edge and the horizon line up and the boundary disappears. The menu runs from brunch to Asian and European dinners, and there is a DJ and a fire show in the evening. Sister venues carry the same name in Nha Trang and Hoi An, so the brand is familiar to Thai travellers. What it does best is let you swim and then slide straight into dinner, which suits a plan built around half a day.

The easy option — sand, no entry fee

If the beach clubs above feel like too much, this is the answer. It sits at 100C/2 on the Trần Hưng Đạo main road, walkable from central Dương Đông, and opens from nine in the morning until one at night. No entry fee, no lounger rental — you take a chair on the sand and the price of a drink buys you the sunset. What you give up is the installations and the infinity pool; what is left is sea, sky and palm trees. Photographically that means an honest frame of silhouettes and colour. After dark the grill comes out and it stays fairly quiet, so the natural sequence is sunset, dinner here, then walk on to the night market.

Seafood is by weight, so settle the per-kilo rate first, and you are sitting on sand — bring repellent for after dark.
