Six kilometres of sand, a 43rd-floor terrace, and tables set out on black rock

Nha Trang is laid out in a single line along its beach. Trần Phú boulevard runs north to south beside six kilometres of sand, and the hotels and cafes all sit on that one line. That makes the photographic question simple: do you want the sea at eye level, or from above?

At eye level the palms and parasols do the framing for you. From above, the bay and its islands fit into one frame — there are nineteen islands in Nha Trang bay, so height never leaves you with an empty horizon. North of the city, the black boulder coast at Hòn Chồng gives you a third option entirely.

The light is good twice. The beach faces east, so sunrise comes up straight in front of it; on the rooftops the sun drops behind the mountains and the city lights come on afterwards. The six below are split across those three axes. A drink runs 50,000–120,000₫ (60–150 baht); rooftop entry or a cocktail is around 150,000₫, about 190 baht.

Sailing Club Nha Trang

Palms and parasols do the framing for you

A beach club halfway along Trần Phú, running straight off the road onto the sand. It is one of the longest-standing beachfront places in the city, which is why the palms here are thick and lean low — those trees are what frame the picture. By day it is parasols and bean bags on white sand; by evening, bulbs strung through the branches and fire on the beach. Food and drinks cost three or four times a local shop, but the price buys you the spot, the toilets and the showers, so it adds up if you plan half a day on the sand. If you only want the photograph, order one drink and ask for a table nearer the water.

Before you goBean bags and parasols usually carry a minimum spend — ask before you sit down. The sun is fierce at midday and the shaded spots go first, so claim a place in the morning. At night it turns into a club and the music gets loud, so finish before sunset if you have children with you. Sandals are the sensible choice; shoes get wet on the sand.

Skylight Nha Trang

From the 43rd floor the whole bay fits in one frame

An open-air rooftop on top of the Premier Havana hotel on Trần Phú. There is no glass wall, only a railing, so the view runs all the way round, and one section of the floor is a sky deck you can see straight through. Nha Trang is a low city strung along a beach and has few high vantage points, but from here the six-kilometre beach and the islands of the bay sit in a single frame. The sun drops behind the mountains to the west and the city lights come on afterwards, so sunset and night view happen from the same seat. There is an entrance fee, usually bundled with a drink voucher — check what your ticket includes before you go up.

Before you goGo up about forty minutes before sunset and you get both the sunset and the lit city from one seat. It is open-air and the wind is strong — hats and light scarves will go over the edge, so keep loose things in your bag. Entry prices and what the ticket includes change from season to season, so confirm on site. Later at night it turns into a club and the music gets loud. There may be time restrictions for entry with small children. The ticket includes one welcome drink and children under 130 cm enter free. There is no advance online sale — buy at the reception desk on the day. Booking a table at the restaurant inside covers the entry instead.

A frame where the pool runs straight into the sea

A microbrewery and restaurant on Trần Phú beach. Copper fermentation tanks stand inside the building and a swimming pool sits outside, right up against the sand. The picture here is the pool line — there is an angle where the water surface and the sea horizon overlap, with palm fronds closing the top of the frame. The beer comes as a sampler paddle — pilsner, dark lager, a passionfruit brew — which is the sensible first order. It runs from breakfast through to late, so any hour works; at midday there may be a minimum spend or a fee to use the pool, so ask at the entrance.

Before you goThe pool is not guests-only, but using it may carry a minimum spend or a fee — check at the entrance first. Photographs are best in late afternoon when the low sun reflects off the water. The price range is wide: beer and snacks stay cheap, while seafood dishes climb with the market rate. The indoor room is air-conditioned, which helps in the midday heat.

On the black rocks of Hòn Chồng, with the tables pushed out over the sea

A seafood house out on the Hòn Chồng headland north of the city. This stretch of coast is piled with black granite boulders that look as if they were rolled into the sea, which gives you a completely different picture from the white-sand shots — surf breaking on rock, with Nha Trang bay and Hòn Tre island beyond. Ask for a table on the sea-facing terrace. You order by picking from the tanks and it is priced by weight, so confirm the per-kilo rate before you point. Then choose the treatment: steamed (hấp), charcoal-grilled (nướng) or stir-fried with garlic (xào tỏi). First time, grilled for prawns and steamed for shellfish is hard to get wrong.

Before you goSeafood is sold by weight — always confirm the per-kilo rate and the rough weight before you choose from the tank. Bill shocks nearly always come from skipping that step. The rock walkway is slippery, so shoes with a sole beat sandals, and there is little shade in the middle of the day. Pair it with the Hòn Chồng rocks in late afternoon and you get the surf shots and the sunset in one trip.

An indoor jungle dropped into the middle of the city

A cafe and restaurant on Võ Trứ that turns out to be entirely plants inside. Vines are trained up the walls and across the ceiling, with water channels and small bridges laid through the room to make it read as jungle. Most Nha Trang photographs come out blue and bright — sea, sky, sand — so one frame from here changes the rhythm of the set. The green is lit low, so take a seat by a window or directly under a lamp, and white or light clothing separates best from the background. It opens from breakfast coffee through to dinner, and it is air-conditioned, which makes it a good midday escape from the heat.

Before you goThe room is dark and phone night mode turns the greens muddy — ask for a window seat or one right under a lamp. The best spots (on the bridge, beside the water) go to whoever sits first, so mornings are easier. With that many plants there can be mosquitoes; bring repellent or long sleeves if you react badly. It is a bit far to walk from the beach, so a Grab is easier.

Literally the railway cafe — the photograph only happens when a train does

A neighbourhood cafe pressed against the north-south railway near Nha Trang station. The name, đường tàu, simply means the railway line. This is not the Hanoi arrangement where stools sit on the sleepers — the seats are on the road beside the track, and when a train comes through it enters your frame. Only a handful of Reunification Express services pass Nha Trang each day, so it takes some luck. No timetable is posted, so ask the staff when you sit down; a coffee costs local rates, so a long wait costs you nothing. They open at six, and early on the place is almost empty.

Before you goThere is no posted timetable — ask the staff roughly when a train is due when you sit down. This is a live line: do not step onto the track for a photograph, and keep hold of children. Even without a train it is a good-looking alley in the morning light and worth the stop for the local cafe atmosphere alone. Bring cash.
